Meet the Founder: The Story Behind Bush Paws
Every safari begins with a story. Ours began at Lake Manyara.
I grew up in the shadow of Lake Manyara National Park, where my father worked as a conservator. While other children spent their school holidays at home, I spent mine in the bush beside him — learning, from a very young age, that the wild doesn't reveal itself to those who rush. My father taught me to watch closely, to move quietly, and to respect every animal we crossed paths with, no matter how small.
It was there, among the acacia trees and the calls of hornbills at dusk, that I fell in love with lions and leopards.
My father had a story for everything. How a lioness reads the wind before a hunt. How a leopard can vanish into a tree with an impala twice its size. How every roar, every track in the dust, every flick of a tail means something — if you know how to listen. Those stories shaped how I saw the wild. They never left me.
From Watching to Guiding
After secondary school, I pursued my Ordinary Diploma in Wildlife Tourism, turning a childhood passion into a profession. For the next ten years, I guided travelers across Arusha and northern Tanzania with some of the region's leading safari companies.
Ten years. Thousands of game drives. Hundreds of guests from every corner of the world.
And in all that time, I noticed the same thing again and again: people don't come on safari just to see animals. They come to understand them. A photograph of a lion is a souvenir, but knowing why that lion is lying in that exact spot, at that exact hour — that's a memory that stays for life.
That distinction changed everything for me.
Why Bush Paws Exists
I started Bush Paws because I wanted to build something different — a company where every guide carries not just knowledge, but a genuine, lived relationship with this land. Where every safari is guided by someone who grew up tracking paw prints before they ever held a camera.
The name itself carries that story. Bush Paws is inspired by the two cats that shaped my entire life — the lion and the leopard — the same animals my father first showed me at Lake Manyara, and the same animals that still guide everything we do.
