TOUR OVERVIEW
Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro via the Scenic Machame Route
The 7 Days Machame Route Mount Kilimanjaro Climb is an unforgettable trekking adventure through some of the most spectacular landscapes on Africa's highest mountain. Often known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southern side and combines dramatic scenery with a carefully paced ascent toward Uhuru Peak.
Over seven days, the trail takes you from the lush montane rainforest through the heath and moorland, across the spectacular Shira Plateau, and into the alpine desert around Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu. The final challenge is the summit ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, followed by a descent through the Mweka route.
The seven-day itinerary allows the climb to be spread over more manageable stages, including separate nights at Karanga and Barafu before the summit attempt. Day 3 also follows the classic acclimatization pattern of climbing higher to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp.

Day 1 :
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Machame Gate, where your guide and mountain crew will complete the necessary park registration and entry procedures.
From the gate, the trek begins through the lush montane rainforest. The trail gradually climbs along a winding path surrounded by thick vegetation, trees and birdlife before reaching Machame Camp, where you will spend your first night on the mountain.
This first day introduces you to the mountain at a comfortable pace while allowing you to enjoy the beautiful forest environment.

After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and continue climbing into the heath and moorland zone.
The trail becomes steeper as you ascend along rocky ridges, with the vegetation gradually becoming shorter and more open. As you gain altitude, the views across the surrounding landscape become increasingly impressive.
Eventually, you reach the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Kilimanjaro. After arriving at Shira Camp, enjoy dinner and rest as your body continues adapting to the increasing altitude.

After breakfast, continue eastward across the alpine landscape toward Lava Tower, reaching an altitude of approximately 4,600 metres. You will have time to rest and enjoy lunch around Lava Tower before beginning the descent toward Barranco Valley.
Although you climb significantly higher during the day, you descend to sleep at approximately 3,900 metres at Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” pattern is an important part of the route's acclimatization strategy.
The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as you approach Barranco, with impressive views of the mountain and surrounding valleys.

Wake up to spectacular views of the Barranco Wall.
After breakfast, begin the climb up the famous wall. Although it looks dramatic from below, the section is a trekking scramble rather than technical rock climbing. Your mountain guide will help you choose the safest route and maintain a comfortable pace.
After reaching the top, continue through a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.
This is a shorter trekking day, giving you valuable time to rest and acclimatize before the final stages of the climb.

The trail passes through an increasingly barren alpine environment as you climb toward approximately 4,600–4,700 metres. From Barafu, you will have views toward the summit area and surrounding peaks when weather conditions permit.
After arriving at camp, you will have an early meal and rest. Your guide will provide a briefing for the summit attempt, including pacing, hydration and preparations for the early-morning departure.
Try to sleep early because the summit attempt begins during the night.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
This is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro climb.
You will normally begin the summit attempt around midnight or in the very early morning, depending on the final schedule and mountain conditions.
With headlamps lighting the trail, you will slowly ascend toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The climb is physically demanding, but your guide will set a steady pace designed to help you conserve energy.
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak – 5,895 metres, the highest point in Tanzania and Africa.
At the summit, take time to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the extraordinary views when weather conditions allow.
After the summit, begin the long descent toward Mweka Camp. Descending to a lower elevation provides an opportunity to recover after the summit push.

As you descend, the environment becomes greener and warmer. At the gate, complete the final park procedures and collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate where applicable.
