5 Days Marangu Route Mount Kilimanjaro Climb

TOUR OVERVIEW

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via the Classic Marangu Route

The 5 Days Marangu Route Mount Kilimanjaro Climb offers a classic journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro through some of Tanzania's most remarkable mountain landscapes.

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu approaches Kilimanjaro from the eastern side and is the only major Kilimanjaro route where climbers stay in mountain huts rather than camping in tents. The trail passes through lush rainforest, open heath and moorland, alpine desert and finally the high-altitude summit environment of Kibo.

Over five days, you will trek from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut and Kibo Hut, before making the demanding summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. After reaching the summit, you descend to Horombo Hut and complete the trek through the same route to Marangu Gate.

The 5-day itinerary is a direct and challenging ascent because it does not include the additional acclimatization day at Horombo found in the 6-day Marangu itinerary. Climbers should therefore be appropriately prepared for the altitude and follow their mountain guide's instructions throughout the trek.

Day 1 :

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer from Arusha or Moshi to Marangu Gate, located on the eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After registration and completion of the park entry procedures, you begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest.

The trail gradually climbs beneath tall trees and dense vegetation, with opportunities to see birds and forest wildlife along the way. The route is generally well established as you make your way toward Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop.

After arriving at the hut, you can rest and enjoy the mountain surroundings. If time and weather permit, your guide may arrange a short excursion around the Mandara area, such as the Maundi Crater viewpoint.

  • Distance: Approximately 7–8 km

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours

  • Elevation: Approximately 1,860 m to 2,720 m

  • Habitat: Montane Rainforest

  • Overnight: Mandara Hut

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 2 :

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, continue your ascent toward Horombo Hut.

As you leave the rainforest behind, the vegetation changes into the open heath and moorland zone. The landscape becomes wider and more dramatic, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi, the two major volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro, when weather conditions allow.

The trek continues gradually uphill until you reach Horombo Hut, situated at approximately 3,720 metres.

Horombo is an important stopping point on the Marangu Route and provides spectacular mountain scenery.

  • Distance: Approximately 11–12 km

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours

  • Elevation: Approximately 2,720 m to 3,720 m

  • Habitat: Heath & Moorland

  • Overnight: Horombo Hut

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3 :

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today you leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before your summit attempt.

The trail crosses the broad high-altitude Saddle, the relatively vegetation-free area between Mawenzi and Kibo.

As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly sparse and rugged. The environment changes into an alpine desert, with very little vegetation surviving at this elevation.

After several hours of trekking, you reach Kibo Hut, situated at approximately 4,700 metres.

This is an important preparation day for the summit. You will have an early dinner, organize your summit equipment and rest as much as possible before the midnight or early-morning summit attempt.

  • Distance: Approximately 9–10 km

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours

  • Elevation: Approximately 3,720 m to 4,700 m

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

  • Overnight: Kibo Hut

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4 :

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Today is the most demanding and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

You will normally wake around midnight and begin the summit ascent under the stars.

From Kibo Hut, the trail climbs steadily over volcanic scree toward Gilman's Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,681–5,756 metres depending on the reference used.

This section is physically demanding because of the steep terrain, cold temperatures and extreme altitude.

After reaching the crater rim, continue along the crater toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest mountain summit in Africa.

At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak offers an unforgettable sense of achievement. Weather permitting, you may experience spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and glaciers.

After spending a short period at the summit, begin the descent back toward Kibo Hut and continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

The summit day is extremely long, commonly taking around 12–15 hours in total, depending on pace, weather and individual conditions.

  • Distance: Approximately 19 km total

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 12–15 hours

  • Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m

  • Habitat: Arctic/Alpine Zone to Moorland

  • Overnight: Horombo Hut

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5 :

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Arusha/Moshi

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate.

You will retrace the trail through the moorland and rainforest, gradually descending to warmer elevations as the vegetation becomes greener.

After reaching Marangu Gate, complete the final park procedures and receive your summit certificate where applicable.

Your vehicle will then transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi, bringing your 5 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro adventure to an end.

  • Distance: Approximately 18–20 km

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours

  • Elevation: Approximately 3,720 m to 1,860 m

  • Habitat: Moorland and Montane Rainforest

  • Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch
